What do we learn when one great democracy looks at another? Alexis de Tocqueville's seminal Democracy in America answered the question 1800S. Today, India is the world's other great democracy, and maybe the answers are different. Through stories large and small, this book shows us America as refracted through the eyes of an Indian who is critical but not intolerant, understanding but not starry-eyed. From gawking at wall murals by German World War II POWs in Texas to getting to know the bikers for Christ at the annual bike carnival in Sturgis, from charting the history of immigrant Icelanders to driving a fire truck in a quiet mountain town, D'Souza travels American roads, discovering old cultures and new concerns in one of the most revered and reviled nations in the world today. More important, he explores the lessons in that process, for India and for readers everywhere, as he searches for meaning and nuance in ideas like patriotism and being liberal, in a country's sense of self.Passionate and perceptive, wry and empathetic, this book is ultimately about what it means to belong. Wherever you are.

Dilip D'Souza pursued an eccentric itinerary is his travels across our land. The result is episodic, as a travel book must be, but he traveled in the proper manner, that is, stopping for attractions, distractions, and surprises. For example, he drove a fire truck, watched a dinosaur dig, took an airplane ride on the spur of the moment, and had high tea on a mountain. His comparisons of strengths and weaknesses of his homeland and the US are instructive and his musing about community, diversity, religion, and patriotism make important points. As one of the people mentioned in his book, I'm biased, but I enjoyed the read, and I think you will, too.Product details

Roadrunner An Indian Quest in America Dilip D'Souza 9788172239060 Books Reviews
I loved this book. I loved the perspective of a fellow human being from another part of the world enjoying his encounters with all walks of American life. He brings humor, warmth, and intelligence to each and every spot he touches down upon. It's a wonderful read for every American to remind us that it is not all about politics, religion, or whatever other lines we draw around us, but rather it is a country of all ideas and people enjoying and living together in a symbiotic existence.
Dilip has painted a huge canvas with all the colors of our land, and framed it with his soul. I am overjoyed that he has published and even more so seeing references to Catherine and me and all the pain and joy of New Orleans after Katrina. The memories rush in, and I feel his heart beating in his pen. How very lucky and blessed I am to have walked a mile or so with him. Thank you for sharing this journey with all of us . . . . and I pray for a sequel and more good fellowship. Blessings and Peace, with love from your friends, who can never forget. Lanny & Catherine
Dilip D'Souza writes with passion on his quest to discover America - through different lenses. The road he chooses is the one less traveled. Often, he takes a detour, sometimes to trace a connection, and sometimes to pause and contemplate. This part might get disconcerting at times, as he segues away to remote places on the physical and temporal map. But, fear not, he gets back on track to lead you on a pleasant ride. So, pick up a copy, pack your bags and get behind that wheel. And one more thing, throw out that GPS.
