Spencer Quinn’s first original e-short story reveals how everyone’s favorite detective duo—Chet the Dog and P.I. Bernie Little—came to meet before their first big case in Dog On It.
As fans know, Chet first met Bernie on that fateful day when he flunked out of K-9 police school. The details of that day though have always remained a little vague (like so much in Chet’s doggy brain). All we know is that Chet had been the best leaper in his K-9 class, but for some reason he failed his final leaping test...and that a cat was involved...and that there was some blood. But whose? The test, the cat, the blood—all pieces of a puzzle that, when solved, will bring down a dangerous gang of thieves—and signal the start of a beautiful friendship.
This fateful day has been alluded to in every book in the series, and now fans of Chet and Bernie will finally get to find out what actually happened. For these two beloved characters, it was something like love at first sight—and, for Chet, at first smell, too.

If you've been reading the Chet and Bernie books all along, this story fills in a vital part of the history of the partnership. If you're new to the series A Cat Was Involved will serve as an introduction to one of the most entertaining, funny and often suspenseful series you'll ever have the pleasure of reading.I have read an awful lot of mystery and crime novels, with and without dogs. I love a lot of them but the Chet and Bernie books are something special. Since Chet the dog is the narrator of all the books there would have to be anthropomorphism, but Quinn seems to have a special understanding of a canine's take on things. Chet never loses his essential dogness, even as he relates his adventures in the first person...er...canine.
Spencer Quinn is a pen name for Peter Abrahams, who is an acclaimed and established writer of suspense fiction for adults as well as mysteries for young adults, all of which would explain why these books are so well written, right from the start of the series.

A Cat Was Involved A Chet and Bernie Mystery eShort Story The Chet and Bernie Mystery Series eBook Spencer Quinn Reviews
I have read a few of the "Chet and Bernie" books already and really enjoyed finding out how they came to be. Being a retired dog breeder and dog show Judge, I love a good dog story. It also helps that Spencer is living in my home state in my Fathers old Stomping grounds. I connect easily with people who live on the Cape. Thanks for some very good reads Mr. Quinn.
I fall in love with Chet all over again every time I read one of his narratives. He has all the qualities we love in our dogs, plus a little extra besides. Understanding human language (more than a few commands) is one of those 'besides.' Chet also reads human body language exceptionally well - especially when there's food involved.
It wouldn't be Chet and these books wouldn't be nearly as much fun if Chet didn't have that gift of understanding human gab -- even if he takes everything said quite literally. Still, he'd like to emphasize that numbers aren't his game. His favorite number is two. Well, that's pretty much his only number. Two is a very nice number, though. Like two slim jims. Or two crullers. Both are his favorite snack.
As one reviewer pointed out, this narrative doesn't gibe with certain bits of the Chet and Bernie history we've been given in previous books. But who cares. Like Chet and Bernie, the story is top-notch.
A Cat was Involved by Spencer Quinn 5 stars★ and a big favorite♥♥
(Chet and Bernie Mystery eShort Story Book 1)
Loved this. I don't often read mystery books. Really hardly ever. But this series is one of the few exceptions.
Really loved Chet (the dog). As for the title, "A Cat Was Involved"... Well being that cats are the dogs nemesis (at least with the dogs I've owned), I expected there to be trouble and my expectations were spot on. Chet is an average big black mutt dog. He has a sharp intellect (for a dog) and loves eating people food (Crullers and beef jerky are his favorites). And he would've passed the K-9 training if it weren't for that cat.
This was just a short little novella taste. I enjoyed the character development for Chet. And I expect that there will be more development for Bernie in the novels of this series. This was a good novella opening to the Chet and Bernie Mysteries. I am looking forward to reading this series.
I liked this all right, especially as it explained how Chet came to belong to Bernie, but that reason turned out to be much simpler and less interesting than what I had imagined as I read references to it in the full-length novels about the two. Perhaps I am lacking in some ability to enjoy short pieces like this, because after buying and reading three of them, I have decided not to do so again. They gave me the feeling that the author just wanted to produce something to make more money, or else he was being badgered by fans or publisher to write more about Jet and Bernie but has lost the energy, the desire, or the imagination for the task. I hope he will get it back, if so, because I would buy more books like Dog on It and the rest in the series.
I am a huge fan of the Chet and Bernie mysteries - I have read all of them so far. I hate to say that this e-short was a BOMB. Totally not even worth the dollar or two I paid for it. For one thing, it was super-short. I was expecting a novella. This isn't even a novella, it's really just a chapter or two. Also, there are discrepancies in it from the novels - like Bernie got Chet after the divorce? Then how is it that in the novels Chet is always remembering things from when Leda was in the home with Charlie?? If you have to pay for this, don't waste your money. You won't learn anything new, really, and it will just leave a bad taste in your mouth. Spend your money on the actually novels which are fantastic. Spencer Quinn really missed the mark with this one. I also purchased The Iggy Chronicles which I have not yet read. I sure hope I won't be disappointed in that short, as well.
This is a prequel to the first Chet and Bernie mystery,Dog On It .
In this little short story (under 40 pages), we learn how Chet and Bernie first met, and we (finally!) hear the scoop about Chet's rather ungraceful exit from the police K-9 training program. (Hey, it wasn't his fault! A cat really WAS involved).
I enjoyed this; it was cute and filled in a couple of the blanks in this duo's history. Chet did seem to be a bit confused though. In this story Bernie is already living alone when Chet comes into his life, but throughout the series Chet has pretty clear memories of living with Bernie's wife and young son. Ah well, Chet would be the first to admit that he's not that great with "details" - he's more of a "live in the moment" kind of dog!
Series Brief The series is told from Chet the dog's point of view. Chet is a canine charmer who partners up with Bernie Little, ex-cop and current private investigator to solve mysteries. The mysteries are definitely "light", but Chet's observations about human behavior are insightful and often hilarious. The pair's obvious affection and devotion to each other is heartwarming.
Little (if any) strong language and no sexual content.
If you've been reading the Chet and Bernie books all along, this story fills in a vital part of the history of the partnership. If you're new to the series A Cat Was Involved will serve as an introduction to one of the most entertaining, funny and often suspenseful series you'll ever have the pleasure of reading.
